Abidjan: Friday as day of prayer for late imam

Muslim community leaders in the Ivorian economic capital Abidjan have set Friday as a day of general prayer for their late imam Cheick Boikary Fofana who died last month.The Supreme Council of Imams, Mosques and Islamic Affairs in Cote d’Ivoire (COSIM) has requested Muslims to hold prayer sessions on June 26 which marks the 40th day since Imam Fofana passed on.

“Friday, June 26, 2020 corresponding to the 5th of the month of Zul Qa’ada 1441H is the 40th day of the death of the late Cheick Boikary Fofana. To this effect, he (the President of the COSIM) invites the different sections of the COSIM throughout the territory and the Muslim community to organise ceremonies of prayers and blessings on the above-mentioned day for the late Cheick Boikary Fofana,” COSIM said in a statement on Wednesday.


COSIM stressed that its president, Cheickoul Aïma Mamadou Traoré is insisting “on the strict observance of barrier measures” against Covid-19 during these prayer sessions.

 The former president of the COSIM, moreover, guide of the Ivorian Muslim community, Cheick Aïma Boikary Fofana, died on May 17 of Covid-19. 

He was buried two days later at the Williamsville cemetery in the centre of Abidjan in a private burial ceremony.
