The ten “Ambazonia” separatist leaders standing trial before the Yaounde military tribunal were registered as Cameroonians seeking asylum in Nigeria, the office of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees in Cameroon has said.
Julius Ayuk Tabe and co have since denied their Cameroonian nationalities in court claiming to be citizens of Ambazonia/Former British Southern Cameroons- a country the Yaounde military tribunal says “it does not yet exist”.
“Since the State of Ambazonia does not legally exist, (these) asylum seekers coming from Cameroon were registered as Cameroonian nationals,” the Public Information Officer of the UNHCR Office in Yaounde Xavier Bourgois exclusively told journalducameroun.com.
He however refused to make public the documents saying it will be a violattion of their privacy and it is now left to them to make public their documents as asylum seekers.
A task which is highly awaited in court as the Ambazonia leaders have been tasked by the Yaounde military tribunal to produce documents backing their claims.
One of their lawyers from Nigeria Barrister Abdul Oroh told journalducameroun.com that he had secured all the necessary documents backing the claims that the Ambazonia leaders were either refugees or asylum seekers and should never have been returned to Cameroon. He however failed to disclose the nationality under which they were registered.
Barrister Oroh said he is in no hurry to produce the documents and will only make them public in court at the appropriate moment.
Julius Ayuk Tabe and co are expected to return at the Yaounde Military Tribunal on February 20.
