An Argentine professional hunter was trampled by an elephant in Namibia’s Otjozondjupa region at the weekend, the police said on Sunday.According to a police report, Jose Monzalvez, who was in the country for trophy hunting, was attacked and killed by the elephant on Saturday on a private farm in the Kalkfeld district of Otjozondjupa.

Regional police spokesperson Maureen Mbeha told journalists that five trophy hunters – three Namibians and two Argentine nationals – were on a hunting mission for an elephant at the farm.

She said while following a herd of elephants, one of the jumbos spotted them and gave chase – aiming for Monzalvez.

“The deceased was a professional hunter who had a hunting permit with him,” said the official.

She said the hunter’s close relatives have been informed of his death and that an inquest docket has been opened at the Kalkfeld Police Station.
