AWCON Ghana 2018: Cameroon overcome scare to beat Mali

Cameroon overcame a scare to beat Mali 2-1 in their opening Group A game of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.

Second half goals from Meffometou Falone and Nchout Ajara gave cancelled out Aissata Traore’s early strike for Mali to hand the Indomitable Lionesses all three points and put them top of the group.

Cameroon had never lost to Mali going into the game and looked to maintain that perfect record but an uninspiring first half left them with more questions to answer.

Cameroon even had more questions to answer when they fell behind ten minutes into second half after Aissata Traore was on the end of a quick break to hammer past Cameroon goalkeeper Ngo Ndom.

Mali then set to defend their lead allowing Cameroon to throw everything at them but could not hold on as Cameroon got on level terms at the 70 minute.

A corner by Nchout Ajara was poorly cleared by the Malian defence before the ball richocheted on Mefomettou Fallone and somehow found its way into the Mali net to put Cameroon back on level terms.

Cameroon were not done yet as two minutes later, Aboudi Onguene burst forward befor laying the ball for Nchout Ajara who side footed it int the net to send the lonesses ahead.

Cameroon now top the group alongside Ghana as attentions are now turned to Algeria for the second game.
