Botswana announces state funeral for ex president Masire

The government of Botswana said on Monday that the late former President Sir Ketumile Masire will be accorded a state funeral at Kanye village, 85 kilometres from the capital Gaborone on June 29.In a statement, the government said a memorial service will also be held in Gaborone for the former president on 28th of June from 8 am, at the University of Botswana (UB) indoor arena.

The remains of the late Masire will be lying in state inside parliament from 6 am on Tuesday, 27th June to allow the public to pay their last respects.

In the meantime, flags shall remain flying at half mast during the period of mourning, while books of condolence will remain open at parliament, all district and sub-district headquarters and at all Botswana diplomatic missions abroad.

Masire who assumed the presidency in 1980 died on 18 June 2017 at the age of 91.

A revered African statesman, Masire is credited with building a nation that was surrounded by hostile white-minority rule into a prosperous economy.
