Botswana honours late former president Ketumile Masire

The Office of the President in Gaborone on Wednesday announced a Cabinet decision to name the new University of Botswana Teaching Hospital after the late former president Sir Ketumile Masire.A statement from the Office of the President said the new facility located at the University of Botswana in the country’s capital city Gaborone has been renamed the Sir Ketumile Masire University Hospital.

“This is in recognition of Sir Ketumile’s immense and immeasurable contribution to Botswana’s development as theHead of State from 1980 to 1998, and in full recognition of his role as the University of Botswana Chancellor from 1980 to 1998,” read the statement.

Masire was reappointed Chancellor from 2008 until his passing away in June 2017.

Construction of the 450-bed University Hospital started in 2010 and it is expected to start operation in late 2017 or early 2018.

The mission statement of the Botswana University Hospital is “to provide excellence in Medical Education, Research and Patient-centered Clinical Care”.
