Botswana: Venson-Moitoi to challenge Masisi for BDP leadership

Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi is facing a renewed leadership threat, this time from Local Government Minister Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi who has announced plans to challenge him for the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) presidency.Venson-Moitoi, who is a former foreign minister, said Wednesday that she has written to the BDP and Masisi to inform them that she intends “to contest the position of president of BDP at the next elective congress.”

Writing on her Facebook page, Venson-Moitoi said she believes “that in true democratic fashion my campaign will be one that debates issues constructively.”

There have been a number of attempts to oust Masisi from leadership of the BDP and the country since he took over from former president Ian Khama in April.

Main opposition Umbrella for Democratic Change leader Duma Boko recently denied that the motion of no confidence he tabled recently in Parliament against Masisi had anything to do with BDP internal fights.
