Burkina Faso: AFD earmarks €10m for regional health program

The “Demography and Sexual and Reproductive Health” (DEMSAN) project has been launched in Burkina Faso with a €10 million funding from the French Agency for Development (AFD), APA learned from the ministry of Health.The direct beneficiaries of the project are the West African Health Organization (WAHO) based in Bobo-Dioulasso, the eight Francophone ECOWAS countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo).

The project aims to strengthen the role and mission of WAHO in the management and knowledge management of demographic and sexual and reproductive health issues; to strengthen political advocacy for sexual and reproductive health and rights and to foster the emergence of civil society in these areas and to reinforce the member states’ capacity for development and implementation as well as the assessment of policies and strategies for human rights and sexual and reproductive health.

According to AFD officials, the DEMSAN project is strategic with regards to its objectives, the partnership forged with WAHO and the favorable dynamics to accompany the demographic transitions in the ECOWAS region.

This project will combine activities related to reproductive health policies, the promotion of operational research, the support for the emergence of civil society organizations and the development of digital health.
