Cameroon: Biya mute as political actors pour in tributes for Cardinal Tumi

Over 48 hours since the death of the Archbishop Emeritus was announced, the Head of State Paul Biya is still to come out of his shell to make any official statement.

The prelate passed away on the night of Friday breaking Saturday in Douala at the age of 91 prompting an outpour of tributes across the board.

The leader of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement, Maurice Kamto, the Chairman of the SDF, Ni John Fru Ndi, Cabral Libii, Kah Walla and several political figures as well as religious, diplomatic and the civil society have come out to extend condolences to the family and church as a whole.

Curiously but not strange, Paul Biya, President of Cameroon has remained mute since Saturday. The only activity on his social media pages since then has been an Easter message to Cameroonians.

Cardinal Tumi passed away on the same day as the Archbishop of Kampala Cyprian Lwanga who died at the age of 68. The President of Uganda, Yoweri Musseveni wasted no time in sending a condolences message to the Catholic Church via a tweet as Cameroonians still wait on for Paul Biya whose regime has had several run-ins with Christian Cardinal Tumi for over three decade.

Cardinal Tumi even documented these differences in a book titled: “The political Regimes of Ahmadou Ahidjo, Paul Biya and Cardinal Tumi, Priest”.
