Cameroon: Buea journalism Students, lecturers call for freedom of press

Students and lecturers of the department of journalism and Mass communication at the University of Buea, South West Region of Cameroon today marched on campus, calling for freedom of speech, sources have confirmed.

Holding sign boards that read “Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press”, students and lecturers of the Department of Journalism and mass communication, University of Buea raised their voices against the intimidation most journalists face in Cameroon in the discharge of their duties.

Some of the students said the intimidation of practicing journalists in Cameroon is a call for concern for those who are still in journalism schools.

As we celebrate World press freedom day today, reports say at least four journalists are behind bars in Cameroon, some of whom include; Thomas Away Junior, Mancho Bibixy, Tsi Conrad, to name but these.

As such, the day is an occasion to consider the indispensable role journalists play in the society and to call attention to the hundreds of journalists around the world who are in prison cells, or have been attacked, injured or murdered for the “crime” of reporting.
