Cameroon: dirt piles Buea as Hysacam suspends operations following separatist threats

The city of Buea, capital of the South West region of Cameroon is facing a serious problem of waste disposal after the hygiene and sanitation company suspended its operation recently due to the Anglophone crisis.

Piles of garbage litter major corners of the streets with no back up disposition put it plave since the suspension of activities by workers of the waste disposal company Hysacam.

Te workers on their part complain of regular threats from armed separatists who accuse them of concealing corpses, of persons allegedly shot by soldiers, at their dumping ground in Musaka , outskirts of Buea.

The workers have continuously denied such claims but some of them were reportedly attacked and injured by these armed men which forced them to stop their operations till the security situation in brought under control.

On his part, the Mayor of Buea Patrick Ekema Esunge has urged the population to returned to their old hygiene and sanitation habits before the arrival of Hysacam to the city.

Thus groups of youths have been involved in community cleaning in the past days but the problem of managing and disposing the final waste gathered still remains.
