The Divisional Officer for Yaounde I, Harouna Nyandji Mgbatou has banned a planned ‘mega republican protest’ announced by the opposition Cameroon Renaissance Movement party of Prof Maurice Kamto.
Responding to a declaration of interest to organize the protest addressed to him by a senior official of the opposition party, the DO says such acts would encourage the spread of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic the country is still grappling with and provoke public disorder, hence it is prohibited.
The Cameroon Renaissance Movement in the declaration dated July 16 made known its intentions to move around the streets of Yaounde Sunday July 25 in what it has called a mega republican protest.
The protest according to the document is meant to promote living together, call for peace in the two English speaking regions rocked by the Anglophone crisis for close to five years now, show solidarity to the population of the Far North suffering in the hands of the Boko Haram Islamist sect and its unending attacks and push for the promotion of national integration.
The last time the party went ahead and marched in the country- that was in September 2020, hundreds of its sympathizers were arrested alongside some party officials including National Chairman spokesperson Bibou Nissack who is still in jail.
