The government has been urged to immediately order an independent probe into Samuel Wazizi’s death over a year after the journalist denied in detention.
The call was made by the National President of the Cameroon Association of English-Speaking Journalists, CAMASEJ, Jude Viban in his message on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.
Earlier this year, the French Ambassador to Cameroon Christophe Guilhou said Cameroon’s President Paul Biya had confirmed an investigation will be opened into the death of Samuel Wazizi but nothing has since filtred.
Camasej has thus re-echoed that feeling for a proper probe into the journalist’s death as well as targeted attacks against journalists in the restive Anglophone regions.
“On the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, I call on Cameroon authorities to immediately order an independent probe into Samuel Wazizi’s death and let justice take its course,” Camasej President, Jude Viban said.
“Government should also investigate other targeted attacks against journalists and ensure that such do not happen again. Conflicting parties in the North West and South West Regions must refrain from crimes against media workers.
