The Cameroon international Cycling tour has been cancelled due to financial reasons, authorities of the Camroon Cycling Federation have said.
Scheduled to run from the 10-18 March, the 16 edition of the tour was cancelled at the death when some teams were already present in Cameroon.
Two teams from Rwanda and Algeria were already in Yaounde on Friday March 9 using their own proper means to sponsor their trips.
A team from France was also expected to arrive but had gathered in Paris since Wednesday waiting for their flight ticket from the Cameroon Cycling Federation, which never arrived.
Cameroonian teams already lodged in their hotel rooms were forced to leave early to avoid further expenses. The commissioner of the International Cycling Union (UCI), Franco Fernandes Isabel Maria, and the anti-doping controller were also already present.
According to sources at the Cameroon Cycling Federation, the budget, which stands at close to 400 million, allocated for the competition has not been disbursed by the Government. Cameroon could face sanctions from the UCI given that the Tour of Cameroon is part of the international cycling calendar.
