Cameroon: Journalist Mimi Mefo released from Douala Central prison

Journalist Mimi Mefo who was detained at the Douala Central Prison on Wednesday evening has been released, her counsel Barrister Tamfu Richard has confirmed.

She was released on Saturday November 10 just after mid day after spending three nights at the detention facility where she was held on instructions from the State Prosecutor at the Military tribunal in the Littoral region.

Mimi Mefo, journalist and Editor in chief of the English desk at Radio and Television was accused of cyber criminality and propagating fake news but the charges were requalified to propagating information that could  threaten state security.

Communication Minister Issa Tchirroma Bakary said on Thursday November 8 that Mimi Mefo had been held in connection to news she reported on the killing of an American missionary in Bambui Charles Wesco over two weeks ago.

It is not clear whether the charges were dropped before her release but several national and internation groups had called on the government to drop the charges and free Mimi Mefo before he release today.
