The club from Nkolndongo maintained their unbeaten start to the season after striking late on to pick up all three points

After edging out Tonnerre of Yaounde in midweek, Canon had another old foe in the form of Union of Douala last Saturday, April 2 at the Yaounde Military Stadium.
The ten-time Cameroon champions were on the verge of dropping points for the first time this season before Tchikeu’s 90th minute strike handed the team maximum points to maintain their lead in group A.

They are now three points clear of the top having won their opening five games.
It was a laboured win for this year’s title aspirants who were strangely lacking the cutting edge throughout the game. Canon Sportif were snuffed out of supply and often left themselves exposed at the back.
Their defence was completely ripped apart by Union de Douala’s offensive prowess but the Nassara Gamakai could not find the finish.
However, the head coach of Canon Minkreo Birwe turned things around when he introduced Jean Hughes Eyango Priso for the last quarter of the game. The youngsters made runs and threatening crosses from the left flank but there was no one to tap-in.
During one of those moments, Eyango eased past Union’s defence then riffled a low drive which came off the post before his teammate Tchikeu capitalized on a moment of panic in the opponents defense to score, prompting wild celebration amongst their fans.
Union of Douala were left to rue spurned chances throughout the game after producing a commanding display.
Gilbert Mawa Guiffo and Ferdinand Guy Herve Eloundou missed two key chances in the first half when they both fired straight at the Canon keeper from close range.
Ngoh Tibab Blaise arguably had the best chance of the game before the break but Canon’s keeper James Djaoyang produced a smart save to keep his threat at bay.
Union did not take their foot off the gas in the second half. But they continued to squander the litany of goal scoring opportunities created. In the end they paid dearly for their unused chances and succumbed to their second defeat this season. The defeat means Union are now fifth on the logs with 7 points.
