Cameroon: Muslim Community Begins Ramadan Fasting

fasting begins with muslim

The Muslim community in Cameroon on Sunday, April 3 kicked off fasting for the month of Ramadan for the next 30 days.

To prepare for the Ramadan month, Muslim women in Yaounde say they have taken the necessary dispositions to go through the period.
Thus, prices of commodities like cooking oil, groundnuts, flour, rice and corn which constitute essential components of meals are sold at cut-throat prices in some markets as women rush to stock food at home.
Ousseina, a resident in Yaounde did her final shopping on morning and laments the hikes in prices on the market.
I almost did not complete my bucket list to suit to holy period . Prices are very high,’ she said .
Preparing for Ramadan is however not the same for every muslim woman.

It is particularly hectic for women of the working class, most of whom say they have to couple family responsibilities with professional demands. Time management, and discipline is a pre-requisite to having a successful Ramadan, they say.
While the men focus on fending for the family, most women say they will have to wake up as early as 4am to cook the first meal which must be eaten before 6 am when prayers begin for the day.
Meanwhile in forty days the Muslims will gather in the mosque to break this fast and offer two units of prayer – called “Rakat“. The prayers are followed by a sermon, in which the imam asks for forgiveness, mercy, and peace for every being across the world.
