The Muslim community in Cameroon today begin a month long Ramadan that will end beginning June, Muslim dignitaries confirmed Sunday May 5.
Islamic fasting that happens during the month of Ramadan is part of the five pillars of Islam as prescribed by Allah. It is the mandatory act that forms the foundation of Muslim life.
During this period, Muslim faithful are expected to refrain from eating and drinking from sun rise to sun set, while intensifying prayers and good deeds around them.
Ramadan is the 9th month on the Islamic calendar and is observed by Muslims World-wide. In this same month, the Coran, Holy book of Islam is reported to have been revealed to Prophet Mohammed by Allah.
The date for the start of Ramadan is slightly different each year, depending on the position of the moon. Monday May 6 was chosen as the first fasting day in Cameroon, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Tunisia and Qatar. In Morocco, it is said to begin tomorrow Tuesday.
