Cameroon: Saving Mbango, Fisherman’s diary among nominations for Ecrans Noirs

Nominees for the pan-African film festival, Ecrans noirs were revealed at the weekend by organisers of the event.

The festival which holds at the Yaounde Conference Centre from October 31 to November 7 brings together stakeholders in the film sector particularly from the Central African sub region and the rst of the continent.

For the 24 edition of the festival, ten categories have been retained by the jury, while a new category for web series has been introduced.

Prominent among the works nominated this year are the movies Saving Mbango, directed by Nkanya Nkwai and The Fisherman’s Diary, by Enah Johnscott.

They are both nominated in the Best Cameroonian film category alongside other movies alongside other films like Broken, Full Moon or Musa.

Broken, Fisherman’s Diary and Saving Mbango are equally nominated in the “Best Film Central African Sub region” category and will be up against productions from the DR Congo like Wanted, Heart of Africa or Grave erreur 2.  For a third nomination, Saving Mbango and Fisherman’s Diary are equally up in the Best international film category alongside films from Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Morocco, DR Congo and Namibia.

“This is so amazing and I am so excited that ‘Saving Mbango’ has been nominated in three categories at the Ecrans Noirs festival 2020. I can’t even contain my joy, this is a movie that we did with all our hearts, my team and I put every bit of our heart and we are so happy that this movie is getting the recognition that it deserves, the reviews that it deserves and I cannot wait to see how far we go with this movie,” Stephanie Tum, producer of Saving Mbango said.

Two Cameroonian series-Samba le Général and Divine- were retained in the “Best series” category alongside Mutoni (Rwanda), Les larmes d’amour (Cote d’Ivoire), A cause de la coutume (Cote d’Ivoire), Teenager’s, a co-production from Cameroon and Cote d’Ivoire.

Three Cameroonian documentaries were retained in the “Best Documentary-Central Africa” category while just one features in the international category for documentaries.

For the first time at the festival, the category for web series has been introduced with eight web series nominated, among them, the famous “Pakgne”.
