Cameroon’s testing capacity for the Covid-19 has been enhanced following the acquisition of 100.000 antigen tests by the government.
The Minister of Public Health, Dr Malachie Manaouda announced the acquisition these rapid test kits add to the 45.000 molecular tests already available across the country. He added that kits will be shared to all the testing centres across the country
“The Government has just acquired 100,000 rapid antigen tests, in addition to the 45,000 molecular tests available throughout the country. As good news, all Regions will now be autonomous in terms of testing. The motto is tracking, testing and treat, » Dr Malachie Manaouda said.
With the number of cases rising past 6.000, the Public Health Minister said the response strategy will be focus on massive testing so as to detect cases early enough and be able to handle them in time.
“From June 5, we will have sampling points in the Health Districts so as to allow as many people as possible to be tested if necessary. The (Yaounde Multipurpose sports complex) will also be a large collection center in addition to the existing structures,” the Public Health Minister said.
According to the Ministry of Public Health, Cameroon has so far carried out 30.000 tests since the COVID-19 pandemic was declared in the country and the goal is to attain at least 50.000 tests by June 15.
The Minister of Public Health stressed that with government continuously stepping up efforts to increase the testing capacity, the population should play its parts by respecting the preventive measures put in place so as to avoid the spread of the virus.
