Cameroon: Waste management company resumes work in Buea

The waste management company Hysacam has resumed activities in Buea, South west region of Cameroon after shutting down for weeks due to the ongoing crisis.

Workers resumed work last weeken as they could be seen on the streets of Buea collecting the piles of waste items that had littered the streets for weeks.

This comes after the Mayor of Buea Patrick Ekema declared during the last council session on December 18 that the council will seek a solution for Hysacam to resume work in Buea.

A source at the council said the mayor had promised to see his institution meets its financial obligation due the company which was also one of the reasons they stopped working.

However, the situation had been crowded by the Anglophone crisis after two trucks of the company were burnt down by suspected aarmed separatist fighters who accuse Hysacam of concealing corpses of civilians allegedly shot by soldiers, at their dumping ground.

Since Hysacam suspended operations, inhabitants of Buea had deviced different strategies to dispose of their waste with frequent community labour exercises put in place.
