He tendered in his resignation last Friday, March 19 during a mass at the Saint Joseph Cathedral, Bafoussam which was presided over by the Apostolic Nuncio to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, Mgr Julio Murat.
The Bishop of the Diocese of Bafoussam, Monsignor Dieudonné Watio has tendered in his resignation after attaining the age of 75.
The announcement was made on March 19, 2021 during a mass at Saint Joseph’s Cathedral in Bafoussam presided over by the Apostolic Nuncio to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, Mgr Julio Murat.
After 26 of episcopate, Bishop Diuedonné Watio has now stepped aside in respect of Canon Law which requires a Bishop to tender in his resignation after the age of 75.
The prelate himself was out to bid farewell to the Christians during last Friday’s mass explaining to them that it was only normal he tendered in his resignation.
The Prelate, now former Bishop of Bafoussam, urged the faithful to follow the example of Saint Joseph, whom he described as a providential figure of human fatherhood. He said he was happy to take a rest after 26 years of episcopate during which he was first Bishop of the Diocese of Nkongsamba in the Mungo Division, Littoral region, and then Bishop of the Diocese of Bafoussam, in the western region.
Bishop Dueudonne Watio of the Diocese of Bafoussam aged 75 was appointed on February 5, 2010, as Apostolic Administrator in Bafoussam after His Grace Joseph Atanga was transferred to Bertoua. On March 5, 2011, Pope Benedicte XVI appointed him as Bishop of Bafoussam.
After the celebration of the mass, attended by the Governor of the West Region, Awa Fonka Augustine, the Apostolic Nuncio held a consultation with the college of priests for the designation of a diocesan administrator who will assume the interim during the vacancy, pending the appointment of a new Bishop in the Diocese of Bafoussam by the Pope.
