Cameroon:Three arrested for attempted kidnap of students

Three men are in police custody in Douala after threatening to kidnap students from two schools, vandalizing property as well as attempting to blackmail.

Bertrand Belinga Ottou, 38 , Pierre Foe Ambassa, 38, and Elvis Takang, 37 were presented to the press last week by the four police district in Douala.

They are accused of attacking and vandalizing property at schools in the Bonamoussadi and Makepe neighbourhoods in the Douala V subdivision.

On the night of October 22-23, they reportedly burnt one of the school buses of the British Isles School in Bonamoussadi. According to the Principal of the school George Agbor, the three men had threatened them on phone days before to kidnap students and vandalise property if a they are not given a certain amount of money.

They also made similar threats to authorities of the Russian school in Makepe where they requested the sum of FCFA 6 million or they will kidnap students and vandalise property. Their attempts to even destroy property at the school was were thwarted by guards before officials of the institution alerted security forces who later arrested the men after thorough investigations.

Security forces said the suspects did not only harass proprietors of schools but equally other businessmen in Douala through phone or letters.
