Cheriff Moumina Sy, the chairman of the National Transitional Council (CNT) of Burkina Faso has been appointed High Representative of the President, a statement issued at the end of a weekly Council of Ministers’ meeting on Thursday revealed.“The High Representative of the President of Faso is a personality with political, administrative and socio-economic experience, responsible for carrying out the missions of representative of the President, outside the national territory as well as all other missions entrusted to him by the head of state,” the statement added, quoting a decree to this effect.
As Speaker of the CNT which doubled as the country’s National Assembly, Moumina Sy was one of the leading lights of the political transition in Burkina Faso, from November 2014 to December 2015,
Mr Sy had strongly opposed the short-lived coup by General Gilbert Diendere and elements of the former Presidential Security Regiment (RSP) against authorities leading the transition chaired by Michel Kafando.
Sy even proclaimed himself head of state before urging Burkinabes to take to the streets in a show of defiance against the putsch.
A trained journalist, Cheriff Sy is the founder of the weekly paper “Bendre”.
For several years he was chair of the Society of Publishers of the Private Press (SEP) in Burkina Faso.
