Dangote topples Cameroon’s number cement producer

Dangote Cement has seized the crown of number one cement company in Cameroon from Lafarge-Holcim, barely two years after the launch of its Cameroon branch in April 2015.

The information was revealed by Paavo Wiro, Country Director of Dangote Cement Cameroon who disclosed on February 14, that the company already has a market share which fluctuates between 47 and 48%.

Lafarge-Holcim, commonly known as CIMENCAM, shares the remaining 52% with CIMAF and MEDECM.

CIMENCAM had been the number one and sole producer and distributor of cement in Cameroon for 48years, but during the launch of the Dangote Cement Cameroon in Douala, two years ago, Aliko Dangote, stated in the presence of Prime Minister Philemon Yang and other government officials that his company was going to grab 30% of the market share within one year. And in April 2016, the company owned 50.18 of the market share in the business in Cameroon.

The success of the company, analysts say, is a result of a fast extension of the company’s distribution channels to reach customers all over Cameroon. It should be recalled that when the company failed to reach a mutual understanding with cement transporters in Cameroon, it bought 200 brand new trucks to facilitate marketing and distributions of Dangote Cement.

Paavo Wiro, Country Director of Dangote Cement Cameroon says local distributors and sub-contractors however came back to the company. He said only 20% of the 900,000 tons of cement sold in 2016 was distributed by the company while local transported 80%.

Dangote Cement is a has projects and operations in Cameroon and 14 other countries in African. The Dangote Group  is one of the most diversified business conglomerates in Africa with a hard-earned reputation for excellent business practices and products’ quality with its operational headquarters in the bustling metropolis of Lagos, Nigeria in West Africa.
