Death of Gendarme Officer triggers mass exodus in Jakiri

The people of Jakiri in Bui Division of the North West Region are now fleeing for their lives, after the assassination of a gendarmerie officer by some unidentified assailants.

The incident happened on Monday, November 6, 2017.

According to reports Journal du Cameroun gnarled, the incident was provoked by some irate youths, who invaded Government Technical High School (GTHS) Jakiri and attacked students.

The incensed youths stormed the GTHS Jakiri campus in the early hours of Monday to squash the effective resumption of classes, after the numerous appeals made by administrative authorities and elite of the area for parents to send their children back to school.

Informed of the situation, the Jakiri and Bui administration called for military reinforcement from Kumbo to apprehend the culprits.

It was with this goal in mind that the said gendarmerie officer attached to the Gendarmerie Company, Kumbo took up a position in one of the bushes in the Jakiri neighbourhood.

Unfortunately for him, he was attached by his assailants who seized his gun, shot him to death and vamoosed with the weapon.


Bui Senior Divisional Officer, SDO, Emile Simon Mooh, who rushed to the scene of the event told CPDM militants of the Bui IA Section, who were celebrating President Paul Biya’s 35th anniversary that he had given the assassins some limited time to produce the weapon.

Meanwhile, following the macabre incident, there has been a mass exodus of people especially male residents of Jakiri out of the locality for fear of a military crackdown.

Many could be seen quitting the area on motorbikes or on foot as the day was a ‘Ghost Town’ day.  With military reinforcement, even the villages in the outskirts of Jakiri like Mantum and Vekovi were visited by the forces.

It would be recalled that some unidentified culprits had over the weekend burnt down the Administrative block and library of GBHS Jakiri.

The attack in GTHS Jakiri was just a continuation of the organised arson on school structures.
