The government of Ethiopia on Tuesday charged 76 individuals with various terrorism offenses including the killing of security forces.According to the charge sheet read at the Federal High Court’s 19th criminal bench, the suspects were arrested in Qafta Humera district, Tigray State while trying to cross into the country from neighbouring Eritrea.
The defendants, who are alleged members of the self-declared Patriots Ginbot 7 Movement for Unity and Democracy since 2007, last month allegedly crossed into Ethiopia with the aim of launching terrorist attacks.
They were allegedly found with weapons.
According to the charges against them, the defendants killed two security officers by opening fire at Qafta Humera district.
The defendants, who appeared at the Federal High Court’s 19th criminal bench, were handed the written charges.
The court will on Wednesday read out the charges to the defendants.
Patriots Ginbot 7 Movement for Unity and Democracy is an Eritrea-based organization campaigning for greater rights for Ethiopians and operates a military wing.
Addis Ababa had accused Asmara of aiding and abetting the members of the movement to launch raids inside Ethiopia, an allegation the Eritrean government has rejected as ludicrous.
