The 2017 Africa Regional Forum on sustainable development is underway in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia under the theme: “Ensuring inclusive and sustainable growth and prosperity for all.”Africa’s biggest financing conference was opened on Wednesday by Ms. Vera Songwe, the new executive secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).
The conference aims to finalize the strategy for Africa and decide a list of priorities ahead of the UN’s High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in September, which is to be attended by over 180 governments and funding agencies.
The starting point for the discussions in Addis Ababa was the growing inequality across Africa and the failure of African economies to generate more jobs despite a decade of economic growth averaging 5 percent.
Ms. Songwe has said one of her main concerns will be to draft policies and projects that will work for the more than 70 percent of Africans currently dependent on seasonal, rain-fed agriculture.
According to Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affair, many of the delegates attending the Forum will go on to attend the annual meeting of the African Development Bank (May 22-25) in Ahmedabad, in India.
