Football association declares Kamuzu stadium unfit for games

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has declared Kamuzu Stadium as not fit to host both local and international matches, following the assessment and inspection it made recently.FAM general secretary Alfred Gunda told reporters in the commercial city of Blantyre on Thursday that after a thorough assessment, the association and other local sports organizations condemned the facility for “its dilapidated condition”.

“This stadium can no longer host the games. All the matches have been shifted to other stadia. International games will be played at the new Bingu Stadium in Lilongwe,” he announced.

He said there are some areas which need urgent attention, like the artificial turf which has outlived its lifespan, toilets, tunnel, covered stand and cordoned stands, among others.

Kamuzu Stadium had been used for sporting activities and national celebrations since the 1970s.
