Four civilians killed in Buea

At least four persons are reported to have been shot and killed in Buea, capital of the South West Region of Cameroon on Monday by security forces, residents confirm.

The incident took place just about mid day in Bakweri Town, a neighbourhood in Buea which was observing the regular Monday ghost town day.

A resident of the neighbourhood who requested to be anonymous told journalducameroun.com that security forces stormed the area after a tip of the presence of separatist fighters in the neighbourhood before opening fire on a group of boys gathered around.

Three persons died on the spot while a fourth person later succumbed to his wounds on the way to the hospital, the source added. One of the four shot dead was identified as Franz Epizitone, who  has lived with his parents in the neighbourhood from birth.

The killings were followed by reported scenes of shootout between security forces and suspected separatist fighters around the Bonduma gate neighbourhood. A resident simply identified as Nanyongo said they were forced to lock themselves up after series of gunshots as sercurity forces chased some armed men into the quarters.

Gunshots were equally reported in parts of Tiko, still in Fako Division of the South West region but it is still difficult to determine casualties at the moment.
