A Cameroonian gendarme has killed a 17 year old boy in kumbo, North West region of Cameroon.
The event which occurred yesterday September 4, reports say started in Kifem during a stand off between security officers and the population. Eyewitness account say one of the gendarmes suddenly fired live bullets at unarmed civilians killing the 17 year old.
Some moments after the teenager’s death, angry youths are said to have stormed streets protesting against the act. In their quest to get the dead body of the teenager from the security officers, two others, Abdu Aziz, a 35 year old man with four kids from kikaikilaiki was shot dead yesterday in kumbo with another man from Tobin.
Meantime, Cameroon’s defense Minister, Joseph Beti Assomo, claims the gendarme who killed teenager was acting in self defense. A claim greatly debunked by eyewitness’ account in Kumbo.
With the militarisation of English speaking Cameroon, pundits are of the opinion that such incidents are far from over. It should be noted that the government of Cameroon recently sent an additional 400 gendarmes to add to the already 959 military officers stationed in these regions.
According to official sources, the new deployment is in the bid to prevent any hindrance to a smooth school year in English speaking Cameroon. For the past days, schools and main streets in Northwest and Southwest regional capitals have been teeming with heavily armed military officers.
