Bamenda Welcomes AFCON trophy with #BringBackOurInternet campaign

It was with placards and grievances that some inhabitants of the city of Bamenda welcomed the trophy of the African Cup of Nations on February 22. Some of the placards carried messages such as #BringBackOurInternet, and “we want our right to education”. Internet has been shut down in that part of Cameroon for 37days now. A teachers’ strike has also paralysed education in the region for over 3months.

In a video shared on social media, one could hear some youths shouting out “things are not moving” from a crowd in one of the streets of the city. Another could also be heard yelling out, “Well done! But things are not moving”.

Reports say the trophy was received by a calm crowd at the Bamenda Grand Stand which was heavily guarded for its official presentation to the public and authorities of the city. The Indomitable Lions won the trophy after beating Egypt 2 goals to 1 in the AFCON 2017competition in Gabon. It’s the fifth time Cameroon is winning the trophy. It will be presented to Cameroonians in all regions of the coutry.
