In a press conference with both National and International Journalists in Yaounde today, Maurice Kamto of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement, declared himself winner, calling on incumbent President Biya to organise peaceful transition.
His words:” I was sent to kick a penalty, I fired it! The goal has been scored.
I have closely followed national and international opinion regarding the elections and I am inviting the outgoing president to organize a peaceful handover!
As I am involved, I guarantee him and his family a protection at the level of his status.
I am launching a virulent appeal to all candidates in this election to remain vigilant”
Reacting to Kamto’s declaration, Cameroon’s government spokesman, Issa Tchroma Bakary, says it is unacceptable for a candidate to declare himself winner barely twenty four hours after polls. Tchiroma said only the country’s constitutional council hast the right to declare the winner of yesterdays’ presidential elections.
