Malawian Sports Minister Henry Mussa on Wednesday summoned the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) for a meeting over its decision to pull out from regional tournaments.FAM recently announced that it was pulling out of the 2018 African Nations Championship and the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments due to financial constraints.
Mussa said FAM’s decision has been made hastily without thorough consultations on the matter.
“We have summoned the executive of the association to discuss the way forward on the matter. We are going to analyze the situation together and see the best way to address them,” he said.
He added that the meeting would also focus on hiring a new coach to lead Malawi’s national football team.
FAM President Walter Nyamilandu however said the association made several consultations and it was clear that due to financial problems the government is facing the team will not be able to prepare and participate for the two tournaments.
“We are now waiting from government to hear their final decision on the matter,” he said.
For the past years the country’s football team has been facing with several challenges like finances, poor preparations and absence of a permanent coach. The situation has seen football in Malawi going down.
