Mozambique, Japan ink cooperation deals

Mozambique and Japan have agreed on two instruments of bilateral cooperation in the areas of infrastructure development of extreme importance for the socio-economic growth of the southern African country, APA learnt on Wednesday.State-run Radio Mozambique reported that two agreements were signed in the Japanese capital Tokyo on Wednesday during the official visit of Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi to the Asian country.

An Agreement on the Exchange of Notes for the construction of roads and bridges in the northern province of Cabo, were signed by Mozambican ambassador to Japan, Jose Vieira de Morais and his Japanese counterpart Akira Mizutani who is also in Tokyo for the visit.

According to the broadcaster, under the agreement Japan would fund the construction of three bridges in the Messalo basin in the northern province of Cabo Delgado connecting the provincial capital, Pemba and the district of Palma, but monetary details were not revealed.

The second agreement was a memorandum of understanding and cooperation for the development of urban transport in the city of Maputo.

The memorandum involves the Mozambican Ministry of Transport and Communication (MTC) and the Maputo Municipal Council together with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation.

The memorandum was signed by Mozambique’s Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Manuel Rebelo and the Japanese Deputy Minister for International Affairs at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Hirofumi Katase.

The identification of an alternative to the metropolitan transport crisis in the city of Maputo is being discussed during President Nyusi’s visit to Japan where he paid a courtesy visit to the central station of Yurikamome in Tokyo.

The signing of the two cooperation agreements was preceded by a meeting between the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, and Nyusi who is leading a high-profile government delegation.

The Mozambican leader’s Japan visit ends on Thursday.
