Public Health Minister frowns at snail-pace execution of UB Teaching Hospital project

Andre Mama Fouda Public health minister

The Minister of Public Health, Andre Mama Fouda, has frowned at the snail-pace with which the University of Buea Teaching Hospital project is being executed.

According to Mama Fouda, the six percent execution rate recorded by the project with 26 percent financial consumption already recorded does not inspire confidence on the part of the contractor.

He called on the French company, Les Batisseurs Reunis, which is the executing firm of the project to double and if possible, triple its efforts to speed up the realisation of the ultramodern Reference Hospital project.

Minister Mama Fouda was speaking in Buea, recently, while on an inspection visit to the hospital construction site in Muea.

The Minister bemoaned that if the project were to continue on the same pace, then the contractor will not be able to meet up with the stipulated deadline which is supposed to elapse later this year.

The Minister, nonetheless, appreciated the quality of work done and said it meets the project prescriptions as outlined by the Government.

Going by Mama Fouda, the UB ultramodern teaching hospital, when completed, will serve as a reference hospital for the Regional Hospital, the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Buea (FHS), and other hospitals within the Region.

“We saw the need to visit this site and see the level of work done. So far, the quality of work is very good from what I have seen. We made some speculations at the beginning of the project and we also made effort to put in place quality workers and now all the workers are here and working. We have more than 120 workers and we are also calling on the contractors to respect the new work prescription,” he said.

He urged the contractor to recruit more workers to be able to meet up with the project deadline.

“This project will be beneficial, not only to the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Buea, but it will also be the reference in the health sector in this Region. With the new calendar, it will be possible to have the project ready at the end of this year,” he said.

The Minister beseeched the population of the South West Region to support the project by availing themselves to the recruitment opportunity offered by the French contractor.
