Swazi MTN, which has run a monopoly in the country for 19 years, has reduced prices, which experts say is the largest margin ever, APA learned on Wednesday. The rates cut were prompted by the introduction of a second mobile communications company, Swazi Mobile, which will go on air for the first time on July 1, 2017.
Swazi MTN has reduced local text message charges from $0.06 to $0.02 per SMS, while calling has been reduced from $0.09 to $0.05 per minute for local cellphone to cellphone calls.
Economist Mduduzi Mthembu said MTN has been reducing its rates, but this was most definitely the biggest move they have ever made.
“The intention is good and will definitely benefit the consumer. We are, however, wondering if Swazi Mobile would be able to match the new rates charged by Swazi MTN,” he said.
In his view, Swaziland was not yet ready to accommodate two mobile telephone operators, citing the small
population which ultimately translates to a narrow market.
Currently, Swazi MTN has a clientele of over 980 000 out of the 1.2 million people. Swazi Mobile on the other hand reported to have so far reached 100 000 people who have since registered with it since its
launch in April 2017.
