About 125 people committed suicide in Swaziland in the past 12 months, a mental health report revealed on Tuesday.National Psychiatric Hospital administrator Violet Muwanje said most of the cases were a result of depression.
The report showed that 102 of the suicides were committed by men while 23 of the victims were female.
“Swaziland needs to intervene as a study shows that most of these cases are of people between the ages of 13 and 23 years,” she said in the report.
She said the country still did not have an updated mental health policy as the current one is 39 years old.
Muwanje said about 18 percent of Swazis have attempted suicide while only 4.5 percent of these have survived suicide.
