Tanzania fines mobile operators over SIM card registration

The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has fined six mobile operators in the country with heavy fines for breaching communications regulations.They are Zantel, Halotel, Tigo, Smart Airtel, and Vodacom.

They were put on the spot for registering new subscriber identification module (sim) cards without using Identity Cards as required by regulations.

TCRS director general James Kilaba said Halotel was fined Sh 1.6billion, Smart $574,185 (Sh 1.3billion), Airtel $477,015 (Sh 1.08 billion) , Vodacom $417,388 (Sh 945 million) and Zantel $46,376 (Sh105 million).

“This is not the first time we have penalized them, and we will add an additional penalty for endangering the public security” he declared.
