Tanzania: Opposition MP arrested for allegedly insulting President

Police in the Tanzanian capital Dar es Salaam have arrested Opposition Member of Parliament Halima Mdee for allegedly insulting President John Magufuli.Mdee who is Member of Parliament for Kawe constituency in Dar es Salaam was arrested following orders from Kinondoni district commissioner Ally Hapi.

Opposition Party Chadema secretary for Dar es Salaam, Henry Kilewo confirmed this on Wednesday in Dar es Salaam and said that she was arrested July 4, this year at her residential house in Makongo Juu and taken to Oyesterbay police station where she is currently being detained.

Kinondoni Police Commander Susan Kaganda also confirmed arresting the MP following orders from the DC.

The order was issued following controversial statements issued by the MP during a press conference held in Dar es Salaam.where she called President Magufuli shameless and could one day order Tanzanians to go topless.

The arrest comes a few weeks, after Mdee was suspended from participating in Parliamentary sessions for one year after she was arrested to have issued controversial statements going against the house.
