Tanzanian leader appoints new Information minister

Tanzanian President John Magufuli has appointed Harrison Mwakyembe as his new Information minister barely a day after sacking his predecessor.Mwakyembe’s appointment was confirmed on Friday, a day after his predecessor Nape Nauye was relieved of his duties in the wake of a media controversy.

Mr. Mwakyembe who was briefly head of the International Law department at the University of Dar es Salaam is a lawyer by profession.

President Magufuli had enjoined him to better his predecessor’s performance while in office.

Magufuli announced a mild cabinet reshuffle on Thursday, confirming that Mr. Nauye has been removed from his post.

His government gave no reason for the decision.

Nauye’s sacking came just days after he ordered an investigation into the Dar es Salaam regional commissioner Paul Makonda, an ally of President Magufuli.

Makonda was being investigated for allegedly storming the offices of the Clouds Media Group (CMG) last Friday, demanding to know why a particular story about a religious leader with whom he had had a spat was not aired.

The faith leader would have been portrayed negatively in the story, sources say.

Nauye had recommended that Makonda be disciplined for intimidating CMG workers.

However President Magufuli made pronouncements purportedly defending Makonda.
