Uganda, DRC to restock lakes with fish stocks

Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have embarked on a project to replenish dwindling fish stocks in Lakes Albert and Edward which are shared by both countries.The $16 million Lakes Edward & Albert Integrated Fisheries & Water Resources Management Project – LEAF II project is to be implemented over five years and is funded by the African Development Bank.

Speaking on Friday, Stephen Ogwede the LEAF II project coordinator said emphasis will be put on promoting good fishing methods among the communities.

He said a fish catchment study will first be carried out to determine how much fish is in the lakes and then restock.

 Ogwede added that periodic meetings will also be held with officials from both Uganda and DRC over measures to conserve both lakes.
