Uganda orders blocking of pornographic sites

The Uganda Communication Commission-(CC) on Monday ordered telecommunication companies and internet service providers to block local and international pornographic sites.According to UCC Executive Director Godfrey Mutabazi 17 popular local and 10 international pornography websites have been singled out for blocking.

Mutabazi says the list was generated by the Pornography Control Committee.

“The commission is in receipt of a list of internet sites with pornographic content from the Pornography Control Committee…the committee has established that the list of the website attached hereto are currently streaming pornographic to Uganda in breach of section 13 of the Anti-Pornography Act, 2014,” a letter to that effect reads.

Mutabazi has warned that telecom companies and internet providers risk penalties if they don’t comply with the new directive.

Last year Uganda’s minister for Ethics inaugurated the Pornography Control Committee with functions are ensuring apprehension and prohibition of pornography perpetrators, collection and prohibition of pornographic materials, educating.

They also include sensitizing the public about pornography, overseeing acquisition and installing effective protective software in electronic equipment such as computers, mobile phones and televisions for detection and suppressing pornography.
