UNHCR Deputy Chief visits Cameroon

Volker Türk, Assistant High Commissioner for Protection

Volker Türk, Assistant High Commissioner for Protection at the United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR is in Cameroon for a two-day working visit. A statement from the country office of the agency says during the visit which runs from July 18 to 199, Volker Türk will meet top ranking state officials to discuss issues related protection and assistance programs for Nigerian refugees living in Cameroon’s Far North region.

The German-born UN official is also expected to meet representative of countries providing aid to the refugees. He will also meet officials of other UN agencies in Cameroon as well as representatives of non-governmental organisations assisting Nigerian refugees.

Volker Türk is visiting Cameroon at a time when the country is reported to be violated clauses of a tripartite agreement on voluntary repatriation of Nigerian refugees living in Cameroon. The agreement was signed earlier this year, yet Cameroon appears to have continued to force several thousands of refugees out of its territory.

It should be noted that the UNHCR currently ensures protection and assistance to close to 330,000 refugees and asylum seekers. They are hosted in camps and communities in the country’s East, Adamawa, North and Far North regions.
