US army sends team to escort extradited American fugitive

The United States government has sent soldiers to escort American fugitive David Anson Alandt who has been incarcerated in Swaziland since last year, APA reports here on Friday. The team of Americans, accompanied by US embassy officials and local police, fetched Alandt from Matsapha Maximum Security Prison on Friday and whisked him away.

Security was very tight during this process and journalists were barred from capturing the event, let alone going beyond the main entrance to the prison, which is about 100 metres from the actual prison.

Alandt was arrested while paying a visit to the US Embassy in Swaziland in 2016 and has been in custody since then after it transpired that he was wanted for contempt of court in his native country since he had a pending case at the Circuit Court of Saline County in Arkansas for illegal possession of marijuana.

Alandt was also said to be a former special agent in the US.

While he was in prison Alandt was denied bail because he was viewed as a flight risk.

At some point he boycotted his prison meals and asked that they be given to hungry Swazi children.
