The Government of the United States has congratulated Cameroon on the arrival of 391,200 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine against the deadly Coronavirus pandemic through the COVAX initiative which it partly finances.

A press release from the US Embassy in Yaounde indicates that the United States recently announced an initial $2 billion obligation out of a total planned $4 billion to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance to support the COVAX Advance Market Commitment.

This makes the United States the single largest contributor to global COVID-19 vaccine access.

“The health of Cameroonians is one of the top priorities for US foreign assistance in Cameroon. We have worked side by side with the Government of Cameroon, health officials for years and have invested over half a billion dollars to strengthen the health system and fight HIV, TB, malaria and other diseases, including COVID-19,” The US Embassy Charge d’Affaires a.i. Vernelle Trim FitzPatrick said.

The AstraZeneca vaccines arrived Cameroon Saturday April 17 and were received by the Minister of Public Health, Dr Malachie Manaouda, several ambassadors and representatives of the United Nations Systems in Cameroon at the Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport.

The close to 400,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine arrives just a week after the country received a donation of 200,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine from the Chinese Government.
