US supports demining programme in Sudan with 1.5m dollars

The United States has announced a 1.5 million dollars support for the demining programme in Sudan at a donors’ and non-governmental organizations meeting on demining organized by the permanent mission of Sudan in Geneva on Saturday.Sudan has previously complained weak external funding as a challenge in carrying out the activity.

Sudan’s permanent representative in Geneva, Mustafa Osman Ismail, said they are working to provide a safe environment and development in areas affected by mines and wars.
According to the Sudan News Agency, the chairman of the Committee on Assistance and Cooperation of the Conference of the States Parties to the Mine Action Convention, called “Sachi”, praised the level of information provided, as reflective of the extent of the commitment of Sudan to its obligations under the Ottawa Convention.
It was agreed during the meeting to organize another meeting of donors in Sudan to follow up the outputs of the recommendations of the forum.
A report by the National Center for Mine Action in 2016 revealed that there are 230 remaining hazardous areas with a total of 32,108,153 square meters, while the total cleared area is 95,000 square meters of mines and war remnants.
