Zimbabwe VP in India for medical treatment – Report

Zimbabwe Vice President Constantino Chiwenga is in India where he is receiving medical treatment, according to media reports monitored here.A report by online news agency ZimLive on Wednesday said the 62-year-old retired army general flew out by private jet on May 18.

A source told ZimLive that Chiwenga “had been unwell for at least two weeks before his latest airlift.”

This is the second time the vice president has been to India for medical treatment. He was last in the Indian capital New Delhi in February for treatment for what a government minister said was a “minor abdominal ailment”.

Chiwenga and his wife, Mary, have also been losing their skin pigmentation, a condition which Chiwenga said they first noticed after he led a military coup that ousted former President Robert Mugabe in November 2017.

Speculation about his health was reignited this week after he missed cabinet on Tuesday.

He was also not present during Wednesday’s swearing in of Zimbabwe’s new Energy Minister Fortune Chasi at State House. His co-Vice President Kembo Mohadi was present.

The Ministry of Information has not issued a statement on the whereabouts of the vice president.
