South African President Jacob Zuma has appointed Leona Valerie Theron as a judge of the Constitutional Court, the Presidency has said.Effective from 1 July, Theron’s appointment was made after consulting Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng and leaders of parties represented in the National Assembly, the high office said on Sunday.

Theron is filling the vacancy occasioned by the discharge from active service of former Constitutional Court Judge, Justice Johan van der Westhuizen, recently.

She has served on the bench for more than 18 years, including acting positions in various courts — including the Supreme Court of Appeal, the Presidency said.

The office added: “President Zuma has congratulated Justice Theron and has wished her all the best in her new important responsibility of advancing South Africa’s constitutional democracy.”
